562 Chapter 27 – Panic

I shook off the fat guy’s hand, bent down to the bottom of the water, and tried to dive behind Fourth Grandpa. Suddenly, the water shook, and the bubbles that were startled up momentarily blurred my vision. I quickly adjusted my posture underwater. I saw Fourth Grandpa disappear before my eyes, and at the same time, a shadow was swimming in the water, moving just like a sea monkey.

This isn’t a zombie, I thought coldly, recalling my grandfather’s will. This thing isn’t a zombie; it’s something else entirely.

There was no time to ponder my thoughts carefully. The White Snake reacted first; the water shook, and he was the second to disappear beside me. The fat guy and I leaned towards the deep water, and when I shone the flashlight, I saw two white shadows flash past us. One of them quickly swam away. It seemed the White Snake had realized that the zongzi could swim and instantly abandoned his own strength to flee.

I really didn’t know what to do. The strategy I had taken the first time I encountered something like this was to run, and it was the same this time. The fat guy and I exchanged glances, and I suddenly calmed down; my rationality returned in an instant.

Don’t think about anything, just run!

The fat guy and I swam backwards, following the shadow of the White Snake, and made our way to the shallow water. The fat guy discarded his oxygen tank and fins. Looking up, the White Snake had already climbed up. The two of us directly scrambled up the mountain wall.

I kicked off my fins and waded through the waist-deep water to catch up. Suddenly, the water around me rippled, and my ankle brushed against something with a strange texture. Then, a tremendous force yanked me down into the water.

I struggled to get up, my breathing apparatus had fallen off, and the water was filled with bubbles. In my panic, I saw a pair of white eyes without pupils in the bubbles.

Next, this enormous force dragged me towards the bottom of the water. My ankle throbbed with pain, evidently caught by something.

I made one last effort to break the surface and saw the fat guy jump back down, rushing towards me. Then I was suddenly pulled into the deep water. My only remaining rationality allowed me to grab the breathing tube and stuff it into my mouth.

Then I began to spin, my head repeatedly hitting the bottom. I could feel myself being pulled into a narrow gap. I clung tightly to my flashlight, knowing it was my only hope. If I had two or three seconds, I could come up with a way to deal with this, but all my plans required light. But in an instant, I realized my grip wasn’t as strong as before, perhaps due to the previous bone fracture. My flashlight was knocked from my hand, and I watched as its light quickly faded away, plunging everything into darkness.

In the chaos, I exhaled deeply, and the oxygen lamp lit up. Soon, I noticed the effectiveness of inhaling was diminishing—there was no oxygen left.

A cold sweat broke out all over me, and I immediately forced myself to calm down. I forced myself to slow my breathing and stop struggling with my hands and feet.

It was very quiet around me. Slowly, I could feel the stones at the bottom; apart from the oxygen lamp, I could see nothing. But from the speed at which the stones brushed past my face and the flow of water, I knew I was moving through the water at an extremely fast pace.

I didn’t know how long it had been; it might have only been one or two minutes, but it felt like I had been dragged along the dark bottom for a long time. My body temperature was rapidly dropping, and my sense of touch and awareness began to blur.

My consciousness quickly returned, and I felt warmth. I didn’t know how long had passed; it felt like I had briefly dozed off while driving, and when I woke up, I felt as if I had been asleep for a long time.
